Wizard Name Generator

Wizards earn their titles in libraries and laboratories. A wizard's epithet usually records a school mastered, a discovery made, or an explosion survived.

    How wizards get their names

A wizard's full name is a bibliography. The birth name is the least interesting part — what matters is the title, and titles in wizard society are cited, not claimed: other wizards start using it about you, usually after a publication, a duel or a famously survived mistake. Notice how many of the titles here are about reading, keeping and guarding — wizards define themselves by what they know and what they keep others from knowing. When you introduce your wizard, give the name and title flatly, as if everyone should already know them. That's the most wizardly delivery there is.

Prefer a different flavour of title? Try the rogue, paladin or bard pages — or drop the title entirely on the race pages.

    Frequently asked questions

How do wizard titles work on this page?

Pick a race and gender, and the generator combines a name from that race's lists with one of sixteen wizard epithets written for this site — titles like "the Star-Reader", "Reader of Ashes" or "Guardian of the Ninth Door". The race gives the name its sound; the epithet gives it a career.

What kind of title suits a wizard?

One that hints at knowledge nobody else has. Good wizard titles name a school mastered, a text only they can read, a door only they may open — or, for the classics, a catastrophe survived. If your wizard is young, pick a modest title ("the Patient") and let the campaign upgrade it.

Which race makes the best wizard name?

Any — but the flavours differ. Elf names bring the ancient-scholar feel, gnome names suit an eccentric inventor-mage, and a half-orc wizard with a title like "the Runesmith" is a character concept all by itself. Use the race selector to taste-test.
