Orc Name Generator

Orc names are war-drums: two hard syllables, a guttural growl, and a clan name that sounds like something breaking. Full orcs rarely bother with soft sounds.

How full-orc names differ from half-orc names

This page exists because the half-orc page doesn't tell the whole story. Half-orc names soften at the edges — many half-orcs grow up among humans and carry names built to be shouted by human sergeants. A full orc's name has no such compromise: the syllable lists here lean harder (Az-, Ghaz-, Shag-, -gul, -zoth), the vowels sit lower, and the clan names trade the half-orc's earned epithets for pure clan war-words. Generate one of each and compare — Ghorak Bloodfang against Azghar Gorehowl — and you'll hear the difference the lists were written to make.

Orc clan names in this generator combine a war-word (Gore, War, Doom, Rage, Black, Stone) with a violence-word (howl, maul, fang, fist, rend, shriek). In play, players often treat the clan name as the name that matters: the first name is what your mother called you; the clan name is what the war-band chants. An orc who has left the clan — an exile, a mercenary, a paladin, it happens — might drop the clan name entirely, which makes generating just a first name a backstory decision rather than a shortcut.

Using orc names for NPCs and villains

Orc names do fast work for a DM: read one aloud and the table knows the tone of the scene before you've described a thing. For a war-band, generate ten and keep the harshest five for fighters; softer rolls (they exist in the lists — a Urza or a Durza) suit shamans, elders and the one orc in the valley who trades instead of raiding. For a villain, pair the name with a wizard or rogue title only if the character has genuinely crossed worlds — an orc called "the Quiet" is a story hook all by itself.

    Frequently asked questions

What makes a name sound orcish?

Short, guttural syllables with hard consonants — k, g, z, gh — and low vowels, usually in two beats. This generator's orc lists were written harsher than the half-orc ones on purpose: more growl, fewer soft landings.

    Do orcs have surnames?

In this generator, clan names serve that role — two-part war names like Gorehowl or Doomfang, built from a war-word and a violence-word. An orc's clan name is typically the more important half of the name.

How is this different from the half-orc generator?

Different lists. Half-orc names are blunter and more human-adjacent; full-orc names here use harsher syllables (Az-, Ghaz-, -zoth) and pure clan war-words instead of earned epithets. Same engine, deliberately different sound.
