How paladins get their names
Where a rogue's title is whispered and a wizard's is cited, a paladin's is proclaimed. The titles in this list lean on dawn, bells, lanterns and shields — the imagery of oaths sworn at first light and vigils kept through the night. They are also mostly about other people: Shield of the Innocent, Sword of Mercy, Warden of the Gate. That is the paladin in one line — the title describes what the world gets from them, not what they get from the world. Introduce your paladin with the full name and title, standing straight. Everyone at the table will understand the character before initiative is rolled.
Other flavours: wizard, rogue or bard titles — or plain names on the race pages.
Frequently asked questions
How do paladin titles work on this page?
Pick a race and gender, and the generator combines a name from that race's lists with one of sixteen paladin epithets written for this site — formal, radiant titles like "the Dawnsworn", "Shield of the Innocent" or "Light of the Ninth Bell". Paladin titles are the opposite of rogue street names: they are proclaimed, engraved and meant to be heard across a battlefield.
When does a paladin receive their title?
In most settings, at the swearing of the oath — the moment the paladin commits to their tenets. Some orders grant the title then; others award it after the first great deed performed under the oath. For a first-level character, choose a title that sounds like a promise; for a veteran, one that sounds like a record.
What if my paladin has fallen or broken their oath?
Then the most interesting titles in this list are "the Penitent" and "the Unbroken" — one admits the fall, the other denies it ever happened. A fallen paladin keeping a shining title they no longer deserve is one of the best character tensions there is; generate, keep the bright name, and let the table find out.
