Dwarf Name Generator

Dwarf names are carved, not spoken — hard consonants, deep vowels and clan names that record a trade, a deed or a very impressive beard.

    How dwarves name their children

A dwarf is introduced by clan before anything else — the clan name is the résumé. That's why dwarven clan names in this generator are descriptive: a material joined to a craft, a virtue or a body part, commemorating what the clan is famous for. First names are short, hard and heavy with consonants, built to be shouted down a mine shaft. A dwarf abroad might shorten both ('Tor' of the Irons), but at home the full name is used, in full, every time — abbreviating a clan name in front of its elders is a good way to start a story you'll regret.

Complete the character with a class title: wizard, rogue, paladin or bard.

    Frequently asked questions

How do dwarf clan names work?

On this page, clan names are built from two parts — a material or element (Iron, Stone, Ember, Frost, Granite…) joined to a craft or body word (forge, fist, shield, beard, heart…) — giving names like Ironforge, Emberheart and Frostshield. The combinations are generated, so your dwarf's clan may be one nobody has ever rolled before.

Why do dwarf names sound so harsh?

Dwarven languages favour hard consonants and deep vowels — think granite rather than silk. The first names here (Harbek, Balgrim, Torgar, Dagmar) use clusters like gr, kh, rg and k on purpose: a dwarf name should sound like it could be shouted over a forge and still be understood.

Can a dwarf have a nickname instead of a clan name?

Absolutely — surface dwarves and adventurers often go by a deed-name or nickname earned among non-dwarves. If you want that feel, generate a name and swap the clan name for a title from the class pages: "Torgar, the Unbroken" sounds like a paladin with a past.
