Dragonborn Clan Name Generator
A dragonborn's clan name is a family history in two syllables — and here, every generated name comes with the meaning it carries.
Sample clan names and their meanings
Each clan name joins a stem (what the clan is) to an ending (what the clan does). The generator above rolls both banks; these samples show the range.
- Krivmar — the blade that guards the clan
- Norixtalon — the shield that strikes first
- Ophinmir — the coiled serpent that keeps the old fires
- Patrinvost — the oath that never yields
- Shestannor — the ember that stands at the gate
- Akradax — the flame that answers the call
- Daarvex — the thunder that tests every blade
- Fenkenshir — the fang that remembers every debt
The clan comes first — in the name and in life
Of all the naming traditions on this site, the dragonborn one is the most demanding: a dragonborn's clan name precedes their personal name in formal introduction, because the clan is the unit of honour. A dragonborn doesn't have a reputation; their clan has one, and every member's deeds are deposits into — or withdrawals from — that shared account. That's why this generator attaches a meaning to every name: Shestannor, "the ember that stands at the gate", is not just a label but a standard a young dragonborn grows up measured against, and a promise the clan makes to its neighbours about who will be standing at the gate when trouble comes.
When you generate for a player character, roll several and interrogate them. Which meaning would this character be proud to carry? Which would they be struggling to live up to — the richer choice, usually? A clan named "that remembers every debt" produces a different dragonborn from one named "that strikes first", even with the same personal name from the dragonborn generator bolted on behind it. And for a villain or a rival clan, generate the enemy's clan name first: the meaning tells you how they'll fight, negotiate and take offence before you've written a word of their description.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a clan name come with a meaning?
Because for dragonborn, a clan name is a compressed family history — it says what the clan is known for. Each half of this generator's clan names carries a meaning fragment ('the blade', 'that guards the clan'), and the generator shows the combined gloss so you can hear what the name is claiming.
Does the clan name come before or after a dragonborn's personal name?
Traditionally in dragonborn culture the clan name comes first — a dragonborn introduces their clan before themselves, because the clan's honour outweighs the individual's. Pair a clan name from here with a personal name from the dragonborn generator to build a full, formal introduction.
Are these clan names copied from published D&D books?
No. The stems, endings and meanings were written for this site, in the draconic style — heavy consonants, two-part structure — without reproducing any published clan list.
