Elf Name Generator

Elf names flow like water over stones — long vowels, soft consonants and a hint of starlight. An elf may use the same name for centuries, so it had better be beautiful.

    How elves name their children

An elf name is chosen to be lived in for a very long time. Families favour names that sound beautiful spoken aloud — elven naming is closer to composing a short piece of music than filling in a form. Family names are miniature poems: Moonwhisper, Dawnpetal, Silverfrond — usually a nature image joined to a graceful word, and often a literal description of where the family lives or what it is known for. Elves in many settings also take a chosen name in adulthood, so if your character's generated name feels like something they would pick rather than be given, that's very elven too.

Complete the character with a class title: wizard, rogue, paladin or bard.

    Frequently asked questions

Why do elf names sound so musical?

Elven languages in most settings favour long vowels and soft consonants — l, r, s, th — over hard stops, so names flow instead of punching. The syllable sets on this page are built that way deliberately: beginnings like Ael, Sil and Thal with endings like -ielle, -wen and -andil.

    Do elves use surnames?

Usually, and proudly — elven family names like Moonwhisper, Starweaver and Dawnpetal are often poetic descriptions of the family's home, craft or a legendary ancestor, and they can be centuries old. An elf exiled from their family might use only a first name, which other elves would read as a quiet tragedy.

Can I use these names for a half-elf?

Yes — and the mixing is the point. A half-elf raised among elves often carries a full elven name; one raised among humans might pair an elven first name with a human surname, or the reverse. Generate on this page for the elven half and on the human page for the other.
