Oats: Cups to Grams

No ingredient on this site proves the 'a cup is not a weight' point better: the same oat weighs 89, 92 or 140 grams depending on how it was cut.

1 cup rolled oats = 89 g · steel cut oats = 140 g · oat flour = 92 g (King Arthur Baking).
Decimals (2.5), fractions (1/2) and mixed numbers (1 3/4) all work.

Same grain, three weights: shape changes everything

All three products in the converter above start as the same oat groat. Rolled oats are steamed and flattened into flakes, and flat flakes stack with air between them — a level cup holds only 89 g. Steel cut oats are chopped into dense little chunks that settle tightly against each other, and the same cup holds 140 g — over half as much again. Oat flour, ground fine, lands between at 92 g: the particles are small, but the flour is so light and aerated that a spooned cup still weighs little. If a recipe says "oats" without saying which, the cup weights can't rescue you — 89 g and 140 g cook into completely different breakfasts — so match the form first, then convert.

Measuring oats without pressing them down

Rolled oats tempt you to press. The flakes spring up above the rim of the cup, and flattening them with your palm feels like tidying — but it packs extra flakes into the cup and the 89 g figure assumes a loose, level fill: shake the container, scoop gently or pour, let the flakes settle on their own, and level with a knife drawn lightly across the top. Steel cut oats behave like gravel by comparison and level without any drama; oat flour gets the full spoon-and-level treatment described on the flour page.

A common shortcut is grinding rolled oats in a blender to make oat flour. The result works in baking, but don't convert it with the rolled-oat figure afterwards: grinding collapses the air out of the flakes, so a cup of your fresh oat flour is far closer to the flour's 92 g than to the flakes' 89 g it started from — and in practice, weigh the flour after grinding and use the oat flour row of the converter.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams is 1 cup of rolled oats?

89 grams per US cup on the King Arthur Baking chart, for old-fashioned rolled oats poured or spooned loosely and levelled — not pressed down.

Why do steel cut oats weigh so much more per cup than rolled oats?

Packing. Rolled oats are flat flakes with air trapped between them; steel cut oats are dense chopped pieces that settle tightly. Same grain, same cup: 89 g versus 140 g on the King Arthur chart.

How many grams is half a cup of rolled oats?

About 45 g — half of the chart's 89 g per cup. The conversion table on this page works out the other standard fractions the same way.

Can I convert instant oats with these figures?

Our sources don't list instant oats, so this site doesn't publish a figure for them. Instant oats are pre-cooked and cut finer than rolled oats, so neither the rolled nor the steel cut number describes them honestly.
